Elections During the Pandemic: Lessons Learned from the 2020 Early General Elections in Croatia

This paper proceeds with an overview of the context in which the elections took place, followed by their results, which are compared with previous elections for added understanding of the similarities and differences. The second part of the paper enumerates the consequences of the elections for the political system, the political parties and individual actors, and the society at large. In the conclusion, a projection of the short- and medium-term influence of these elections is given.

    Dario Čepo is an Assistant Professor at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Law. He teaches introductory courses in sociology and political science. He received his PhD in comparative politics in 2010 from the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Political Science. In 2013-2014 he was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York City. His major research interests are parliaments, conservative movements, and the European Union. He is the author of several scientific articles, the handbook Introduction to Political Science (co-authored with Slaven Ravlić), and a book, Political Institutions of the European Union.

    Antonio Karlović is a PhD student in European Politics at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Political Science. He holds an MSc in Political Science from the University of Copenhagen. His broad research interests include Europeanisation, European Foreign Policy, and democratisation.
