Ulf Brunnbauer

Ulf Brunnbauer, born in 1970 in Kirchdorf/Krems (Austria), received his PhD in history from the University of Graz in 1999. He defended his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin in 2006. Between 1997 and 2003, Brunnbauer worked as researcher and lecturer at the University of Graz, and in 2003 became assistant professor of history at the Institute for East European Studies at the Free University of Berlin. In 2008 he was appointed professor (chair) of Southeast and East European History at the University of Regensburg and director of the Südost-Institut (Southeast Institute) in Regensburg. He currently also serves as president of the International Association for Southeast European Anthropology (InASEA) and as member of the executive committee of the Hungarian Institute (Munich). Ulf Brunnbauer’s publications deal with social history of the Balkans (esp. Bulgaria and Macedonia), with Muslim minorities in the Balkans, ethnic conflict, and historiography in South-eastern Europe. Other than his interest in nation building, his current research focuses on economic emigration from the former Yugoslavia.
